OPD makes third synthetic drug arrest since April

OWENSBORO, KY (WFIE)- Police are cracking down harder on synthetic drug use in Owensboro.

Authorities shut down a store on Bosley Road Tuesday after they say the illegal substances were found. The owner, 52-year-old William Maglinger, was arrested.

"He's a pretty good guy, but we don't expect something like this in our community," said owner of Gilbert's Consignments Chris Gilbert. 

Police say the merchandise found at This-N-That store in Owensboro Tuesday afternoon was not fit to sell.

Lane restrictions on another bridge in O'boro

OWENSBORO, KY (WFIE)- More lane restrictions on another busy bridge in Owensboro starting today.  This time on the Natcher Bridge.

The shoulder and lane restrictions will allow crews to inspect and do maintenance work on the bridge.

For about the first week, the lane restrictions will be as needed while crews do rigging work on the shoulder.

Starting early next week, drivers can expect lane restrictions in the work zone during the day during the week.

Owensboro WWII vets visit their monument in D.C.

OWENSBORO, KY (WFIE)- Several World War II veterans left on Tuesday from Owensboro to visit the WWII Monument in Washington D.C. 

"They want to remember the price that was paid for their freedom," said WWII veteran Guy Deane.

For many, it's their first trip to the monument. Nine veterans from Western Kentucky are on the free journey sponsored by the Honor Flight Program and led by Daviess County Sheriff Keith Cain.

"I'm surprised this many is here," said WWII veteran Chester Miller.

Alcoa Warrick Operations announced today that three Tri-State students have been named winners of Alcoa Foundation scholarships, providing merit-based assistance during their upcoming college careers.

Each student has been awarded a renewable scholarship, payable in four separate annual installments of $1,500 each year.  Heath Abney of Daviess County High is among the winners.

The award is part of Alcoa Foundation’s Sons and Daughters Scholarship Program, which recognizes outstanding academic achievement by graduating high school seniors whose parents are employed by Alcoa. The students received the scholarships based on academic achievement and potential, leadership ability, volunteerism and community service, and character. They were selected by a national panel of university professionals.

Hume named Daviess Co. boys' basketball coach

Hume named Daviess Co. boys' basketball coach

Pat Hume has been named head boys’ basketball coach at Daviess County High School. The announcement was made earlier today.

Hume, who has served as a guidance counselor and girls’ basketball coach at DCHS since August 2002, takes over the program from Caleb Smith, who served as boys’ coach for four years before moving to Grayson County.

Hume says his priorities include maintaining high academic standards for student-athletes and developing leadership skills among players. 

“I am really looking forward to working with these young men both on the off the court,” Hume said. “It is my goal to contribute to the development of these students as players and as citizens."

Helping students earn GED rewarding for instructor

J.D. Kessinger achieved a feat of life-changing importance when he passed his GED exam in late March. He also became the 100th student to earn a GED with the help of Matt Harper.

As director of the STEP program located on the Owensboro Campus of Daymar College, Harper provides assessments, one-on-one tutoring and plenty of moral support for individuals who are seeking their GEDs. The free service draws adults of varying ages and skill levels. The STEP program is funded and administered by Daymar’s Owensboro Campus. Individuals who don’t have financial resources to pay the GED exam fee on their own may apply for scholarships through The Daymar Foundation.

The Kentucky Labor Cabinet today honored the management and employees of Owensboro Brick Co. with a Governor’s Safety and Health Award.

The 45 employees have worked 257,781 hours without an accident or losing time due to an occupational illness.
