Blood center entering summer with shortage

OWENSBORO, KY (WFIE)- Western Kentucky Regional Blood Center is entering the summer with a blood shortage.

They can't seem to keep O negative blood in stock. In fact, they've almost gone through a full supply in two days.  

"In the last two weeks, our O negative usage has skyrocketed," said administrator Janet Howard.

The Western Kentucky Regional Blood Center only has 12 bags left of O negative blood.

"We need to have like 40," said Howard.

Teenager charged with possession of child porn

OWENSBORO, KY (WFIE)- On Monday, Kentucky State Police charged 19-year-old Cody Carter of Owensboro with 50 counts of Possession of Matter Portraying Sex Performance by a Minor. 

The investigation was initiated while officers from Operation Yellow Banks, which consists of the Kentucky State Police, the Owensboro Police Department, the Daviess County Sheriff's Department, the U.S. Marshals Office, the Kentucky Probation and Parole and Commercial Vehicle Enforcement, were checking area sex offenders for compliance.

Daviess Co. showing owners how to handle aggressive dogs

DAVIESS CO., KY (WFIE)- Aggressive dogs don't get many chances in life, but the Daviess County Animal Shelter worked on Monday to change that. 

Solid K9 Training's Jeff Gellman showed people with aggressive dogs how to make their animals behave. They worked on basic commands like walking on a leash and sit-stay.

Gellman credits the shelter for turning their 90% kill rate into a 90% save rate in the past five years, but says too many dogs are still dying each day in shelters.

New operation helps law agencies make sure sex offenders are following rules

KENTUCKY (WFIE)- On Monday, multiple Kentucky law agencies launched a new operation aimed at making sure registered sex offenders are following the rules. It's called Operation Yellow Banks.

Even though many of the registered sex offenders are following the registration rules, police say other laws are being broken.

Jean Rodgers says she knows someone in her neighborhood is a registered sex offender.

"We don't ever see them. They don't bother us at all. They're very quiet, keep to themselves," said neighbor Jean Rodgers.

Meth lab found near elementary school playground

OWENSBORO, KY (WFIE)- Monday, around 11:20 a.m., the Owensboro Police Department responded to a possible methamphetamine lab located on the grounds of Newton-Parrish Elementary School at 510 W. Byers avenue.

A school employee found the bottle on the playground Monday morning and called police. School was in session, and officers kept everyone inside as they removed the meth lab.

Daviess Co. thinking of opening voting centers instead of precincts

DAVIESS CO., KY (WFIE)- The Kentucky Primary Election is Tuesday, and all that equipment delivery and prep work has Daviess County leaders thinking there might be a better ways to run the polls.

The county clerk is looking into the idea of getting rid of precincts and opening voting centers instead.

It's a three day process, delivering machines to 84 voting precincts around Daviess County. It takes over a hundred miles in the delivery truck.

Each election costs the county $160,000, which is money spent paying poll workers and making deliveries.

Holiday trash schedule for Owensboro

From the City of Owensboro:

Owensboro City Hall and transit services will be closed on Memorial Day, May 28.  There will be no trash collection on Monday, May 28.  All routes will be delayed one day, with Friday routes being collected on Saturday.

For continued quality sanitation service at low rates, please have your cart(s) out by 6:00 AM.  Cart lids must be closed with all trash contained inside the cart.  Do not block cart with vehicles, poles, etc., and be sure the cart lid opens toward the street.
