Daviess Co. drama students putting on two performances

Students enrolled in directing and acting classes at Daviess County High School will present two nights of dramas exploring elements of catharsis, love and the essence of human nature.

Showtimes for the eight plays begin at 7 p.m. Thursday and Friday, April 26-27, with four one-act plays being shown each night in the DCHS auditorium, each directed by a different student. The school is located at 4255 New Hartford Road. Admission is $5 per person each evening, and will be sold at the door or on-line by visiting http://www.seatyourself.biz/daviesschs

Owensboro to hold Bourbon and Jazz Festival

The First Annual Owensboro Bourbon & Jazz Festival will take place beginning Friday, June 15 through Sunday, June 17.  Celebrating the rich bourbon heritage along with special jazz performances, the festival will begin with a music party at Friday After 5.  The schedule of events will include bourbon tastings, art shows, cocktail contests, and more.

Three Owensboro institutions to present Mozart’s Requiem

Kentucky Wesleyan College, the Owensboro Symphony Orchestra and Sts. Joseph and Paul Catholic Church will combine resources to present Mozart’s Requiem in d minor on Thursday, April 12, at 7:30 p.m. at the church, located at 609 East Fourth Street in Owensboro. The performance will feature the Wesleyan Chorale, the Owensboro Symphony and selected student soloists from the college’s vocal studios. The performance will be under the baton of Professor Paul E. Oakley, Director of Choral and Sacred Music Studies at Kentucky Wesleyan. The concert is free and open to the public.

Brescia University exhibits Lex Shipley paintings

Brescia University is exhibiting paintings of Erwin “Lex” Shipley from April 13 to May 13 in the Anna Eaton Stout Art Gallery on the second floor of the Campus Center.

Shipley’s work, which has been collected by many of the people who became aware of him through the 1970s and 1980s in Owensboro and is sometimes categorized as “naïve” and “primitive,” is in a personalized, untrained style similar to that of Van Gogh.

Cole Porter dinner concerts

The Owensboro Symphony Chorus is now accepting reservations for their Cole Porter dinner concert evenings, Monday and Tuesday, March 26 and 27 at 7 p.m. 

The events will be held at Settle Memorial’s ROC, 201 East 4th Street.  Nicholas Palmer is conductor, and Diane Earle pianist. 

The 100-member ensemble will perform favorite solos and choruses, such as Night and Day, I’ve Got You Under My Skin, In the Still of the Night, So in Love, It’s De-Lovely, Begin the Beguine, Anything Goes, and others.

The Performing Arts Academy of Daviess County High School will present “Once Upon a Mattress” on March 9-11. Showtimes are at 7 p.m. Friday; 2 and 7 p.m. Saturday; and 2 p.m. Sunday.

Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students and will be available at the door.

The musical version of the classic fairy tale, “The Princess and the Pea,” puts a rollicking spin on the familiar story of royal courtship with side-splitting shenanigans.

“Chance are, you’ll never look at fairy tales quite the same again,” promises director Candy Miller.

Settle concert series to feature symphony, benefit community

Settle Memorial United Methodist Church is launching a “Good Samaritan Concert Series” to raise awareness and impact homelessness in Owensboro.  This series of three concerts will benefit St. Benedict’s, Boulware Mission, the Help Office, and Settle Memorial’s Good Samaritan Fund. 

The Owensboro Symphony Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Music Director and Conductor Nicholas Palmer, will perform the first concert on Sunday, March 25, 3 pm, at Settle Memorial (201 E. 4th Street, Owensboro).
