OWENSBORO, KY (WFIE)- Almost $100 million is being invested into downtown Owensboro for projects like Smothers Park, the Convention Center, and Riverfront Crossing.

With a bill that big, city officials want to make sure nothing damages that investment. That's why more security is being added to downtown Owensboro.

Owensboro's first downtown project, Riverfront Crossing, opened six months ago and it already has damage. Mayor Ron Payne says it has to stop. For the first time in a long time, downtown Owensboro is a popular place to be.

Daviess County among state's lowest in unemployment

Unemployment rates fell in 111 Kentucky counties between February 2011 and February 2012, while nine county rates increased, according to the Kentucky Office of Employment and Training, an agency of the Kentucky Education and Workforce Development Cabinet.  

Woodford County recorded the lowest jobless rate in the Commonwealth at 6.9 percent. It was followed by Fayette County, 7.1 percent; Oldham County, 7.4 percent; Union and Webster counties, 7.7 percent each; Henderson County, 7.8 percent; Daviess County, 7.9 percent; and Franklin, Madison and Ohio counties, 8 percent each.

The City of Owensboro and Daviess County Fiscal Court invite the region to celebrate the groundbreaking of the new Owensboro Convention Center at the corners of Cedar and Second Streets in Owensboro on Tuesday, March 13, at 10:30 a.m.

 Officials say the center should be finished by November 2013.

Like breakfast?  Farm-city gathering set for this weekend

The “Best Breakfast in Daviess County” is set for this Saturday, March 10 at 7:30 a.m. at Apollo High School with the Annual Farm/City Breakfast.  The menu features bacon, sausage, ham, eggs and much more. This is the 33rd annual event.  The breakfast is sponsored by area farmers and local businesses and is intended to bring together rural and urban interests for a common event.

Dr. Scott Smith, Dean of the UK College of Agriculture, is the guest speaker for the breakfast, which is hosted by the Chamber of Commerce and the Daviess County Farm Bureau.

Consulting office aims to help with workplace diversity

Higher Ground Consulting, a new firm dedicated to growing diversity in the workplace, opened its office today in the Centre for Business & Research in Owensboro.

According to Higher Ground, providing an environment free of harassment and discrimination is not only the right thing to do, but it’s the law. If you own a business, manage an organization or rental property, you must be informed about these regulations.

The company, owned by Alma Randolph Patton, says it can help you find the answers and prevent problems.

Holiday World starts hiring process

Holiday World starts hiring process

Holiday World & Splashin’ Safari officials say they are about ready to begin the hiring process for the 2,100 seasonal positions available at the parks later this spring and that anyone who has yet to apply should do so as soon as possible.

The company also has two full-time openings, food and beverage manager and maintenance technician.

This season, the park will again offer an Employee Transportation Program for seasonal employees who would not otherwise have a ride to work. Available at a nominal fee, bus rides will be offered from Huntingburg, Newburgh, Evansville and Tell City, Indiana, plus Owensboro.

“We’re looking for friendly and energetic individuals who enjoy working with people,” says Holiday World & Splashin’ Safari General Manager Matt Eckert. “We’re looking for ride operators, lifeguards, sweepers, plus staff for admissions, shops, games and foods. We’re like a small city – we have quite a variety of jobs available.”
