Dugan Best plans neighborhood cleanup May 19

The Dugan Best Neighborhood Alliance will host a neighborhood cleanup Saturday, May 19.  The cleanup will be from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. All residents are encouraged to join the group in picking up litter along sidewalks and alleys in the neighborhood.  Volunteers are asked to meet at Dugan Best Park.

5k walk/run to benefit DCHS student fighting cancer

A 5K run/walk is scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. Saturday, May 19, at the Daviess County High School football stadium, with registration starting at 7 a.m.

The race is hosted by the DCHS Student Council and all proceeds will benefit the family of Jacob Helwig, a DCHS student who is battling cancer.

Registration fee is $15 in advance or $20 after May 11. Registration also accepted the morning of the race.

Volunteers deliver groceries to seniors

Volunteers from GRADD, Independence Bank, Comfort Keepers, Specialty Foods Group and Canteen delivered groceries to almost 500 low-income seniors in Daviess, Hancock, Henderson, McLean, Ohio, Union and Webster counties on Thursday.

There are currently 600 individuals on the “Meals on Wheels” waiting list in the seven-county region; and approximately one-third of GRADD aging services clients report that they have had to choose between food and paying for their medical care or utilities.

Focus Awards allow teachers to give back

The Board of Directors of the Foundation for Daviess County Public Schools has announced its Focus Award 2012 Grant Recipients.  Each received a $1000 Foundation Grant to spend in their classroom or school.

Health Grant Recipient: Lisa Yeiser. Ms. Yeiser is Health Resource Coordinator at Southern Oaks Elementary School.  Ms. Yeiser was nominated by Principal Pam Burns.  In her acceptance speech, Yeiser indicated she will spend her grant funds on playground equipment for the older students at Southern Oaks as the current playground equipment is designed for the younger children in the school.

Local WKU students biking 3,000 miles for Alzheimer's

A group of 11 Western Kentucky University students will embark on a bike trip across the United States to raise awareness and funding for the Alzheimer’s Association.

Bike4Alz, formerly known as Fijis Across America, will begin their 3,000-mile journey on May 25 in International Falls, Minn., and end in Key West, Fla.

Participants are: John William Owens and Will Garcia, both of Louisville; Trip Carpenter of Owensboro; Dylan Ward of Hartford; Austin Lanter and Ben Harris, both of  Winchester; Sam Wells of Paris; Jonathan Caron (driver) and Kent Jones, both of Somerset; Tyler Wittmer of Evansville (Reitz HS).; and Josh Amos of Bowling Green.

During the three-month bike ride, Bike4Alz will stop in several major metropolitan areas to hold events with the local Alzheimer’s Association chapters. The group’s goal is to raise $175,000 to benefit the organization and raise awareness about the disease.
