Family Video collecting movies for troops | Community Spirit
Family Video stores, including the Owensboro location on J.R. Miller Boulevard, are collecting movies for troops overseas.
"Movies for the Troops 2012", is designed to entertain the members of our armed forces stationed around the world. Last year, they were able to donate over half a million movies donated by families. This year’s goal is two million.
"The 'Movies for the Troops' campaign is quickly becoming a Holiday Tradition in our company and among our customers,” said Family Video President Keith Hoogland. “It is a way for us all to provide a small token of gratitude to our servicemen and servicewomen for their tireless efforts to defend our freedoms. Our goal is to allow the troops the chance to unwind with some great movies, and to give them a small bit of relaxation to show our appreciation while they serve our country."
Already, a large supply of DVD movies has been in heavy rotation at numerous U.S. military bases throughout Iraq and Afghanistan, according to Hoogland.
The idea for a movie drive for the troops started in 2008, when a Family Video manager in Sumter, South Carolina spearheaded the collection of movies for a local U.S. military base. The program was so successful, it was expanded to the rest of the company.
