Area athletes to compete in Special Olympics spring games | Community Spirit
The Special Olympics Kentucky Area 2 Spring Games will be held Saturday, April 27, at Apollo High School in Owensboro. The Area 2 meet includes more than 150 athletes from Daviess, Grayson, Henderson, Ohio, Union and Webster Counties. The Area Spring Games include both powerlifting and track and field. Powerlifting will get underway at 9:30 a.m. in the Apollo gym. The event’s official Opening Ceremonies, including the parade of athletes, will take place at 12:30 p.m. on the track. And the track and field competition begins at 1:15 p.m.
This is the third of four weekends of the Special Olympics Spring Games season, which concludes May 11 in Louisville. The Area Spring Games is one of eight regional track and field meets held statewide this year. In all, more than 1,500 athletes with intellectual disabilities throughout the state will participate in regional track and field competitions, making track and field the largest participation event in the Special Olympics program in Kentucky.
Participants in the Spring Games automatically qualify to compete in the Special Olympics Kentucky State Summer Games to be held May 31-June 2 at Eastern Kentucky University in Richmond.
