“Home for Hope” in Owensboro

Jagoe Homes will soon break ground for construction of a “Home for Hope” that will benefit Owensboro-based Aid the Homeless and HOPE International, an agency that fights poverty in developing countries.

The home will be built in the Creekside at Deer Valley community near Owensboro, located two minutes south of Daviess County High School. Groundbreaking will take place November 9 at 11:30 a.m. in Deer Valley at 2210 Meadow Hill Lane, Utica, Kentucky. See the Jagoe Homes website for directions.

Homes for Hope is a national organization that unites home builders and their industry partners in constructing “benefit” homes ~ at little or no charge ~ which are sold to generate proceeds that help small businesses in poor countries around the world.

In memory and honor of SPC Brandon Scott Mullins, who was killed in August last year and in honor of all of our veterans, the Mullins family is hosting a new, community wide event called "A Kentucky Hometown Veterans Day Celebration"  to be held this Sunday at 6pm at Good Shepherd Church.

Are you a man?  Can you cook?  Glenmary Sisters looking for you

We are looking for a few good men who are ready to cook for a cause.

Nominations are being accepted now for the sixth annual Men Who Cook Mardi’ Gras Bash, which benefits the Glenmary Sisters. The event will be Saturday, February 23, at the Cliff Hagan Boys & Girls Club.

Men who Cook is the area’s premier Mardi’ Gras event. It features live music, a great party, a silent auction and, of course, men who cook.

First Baptist Church Owensboro, as encouraged by Kentucky AmeriCorps, will be participating in the Build-a-Bed Mission Project. In March of 2009, a Kentucky AmeriCorps program, SUCCESS Corps, began asking local Family Resource and Youth Service Center coordinators about community needs. One of the overwhelming responses they heard repeated time and time again was a desperate need for beds.

There will be special candlelight vigil for young cancer patient Lane Goodwin on Wednesday, October 3 at 7 p.m.  Residents are invited to bring a white candle to Smothers Park in Owensboro.

Gather at the north end of Frederica Street. under and around the canopy, where prayers of healing and peace will be offered.  If you do not have a white wax candle, you may also use a virtual candle app on your cell phone, or bring a battery operated candle. 

College View teams up with American Cancer Society

College View teams up with American Cancer Society

College View Middle School is teaming up with the American Cancer Society to raise awareness and funds for cancer research.

CVMS is hosting its last home football game of the season on Thursday, Oct. 4, as the Vikings host Owensboro Middle School. The seventh-grade game begins at 4:30 p.m., followed by the eighth-grade game at approximately 6 p.m.

The American Cancer Society will have a booth at the game to share important information about cancer and resources for help. Between games and at half-time, special performances are scheduled by faculty, staff, cheerleaders and the Vikettes dance team. The Glee Club will sing the National Anthem to start the evening celebrating survivors and their families. Football players will also wear pink socks during the game.

Beautification grant requests being accepted

PRIDE (Public Responsibility in Designing Our Environment) will award four grants for beautification projects in celebration of its PRIDE Day. Applications are being accepted now and must be received by October 12.

Each grant will be for up to $250. Grants must be used for beautification projects in public places. Examples include medians, neighborhood entrances and parks. Neighborhood alliances, non-profit groups and other agencies may apply. Grants will not be awarded to individuals, private businesses or for projects on private property. Organizations may only receive one grant per year through this program.
