Dogwood Azalea Neighborhood Alliance to sponsor Dogwood and Azalea tree giveaway

 

The Dogwood Azalea Neighborhood Alliance will purchase eight dogwood and 12  azalea trees to give to residents that live in the Dogwood Azalea Neighborhood to plant the weekend of May 18. 

During the ice storm in January 2009, many of these tree species were lost in the Alliance area.  Residents that are interested in receiving a free tree for the weekend planting should call CityAction at 270-687-4444 to be put on the list.

The Owensboro Regional Farmers’ Market will open Saturday, April 20, kicking off what is expected to be the market’s best year yet.

The Market features locally grown vegetables, flowers, meats and baked goods. This weekend, vegetable plants, flowers, early produce and more great items will be available. The Market is open 6:30 a.m. to noon Saturdays in the parking lot of Owensboro Christian Church, 2818 New Hartford Road. In June, the market will be open Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.

Officials are hoping that you will come out this weekend and take part in a gardening project.

It's called the Homestead Garden Project and officials say it's a community effort to broaden the education and knowledge in our area about gardening and the history of agriculture in Daviess County.

Neighborhood Alliances schedule clean-up days

Four Owensboro neighborhood alliances will hold their annual cleanups in the upcoming months.  All residents in the cleanup areas are invited to help beautify the neighborhood by picking up litter along sidewalks and streets on their cleanup day.

 The City Sanitation Department will provide free curbside pickup for junk furniture, appliances and other items to its residential customers in this neighborhood alliance area.  Items must be brought curbside by 6 a.m. the day of the cleanup.  If you have items to be picked up, please call the City Action Line at 687-4444 by the Wednesday before the cleanup.  Smaller items must be bagged or boxed.  The crews cannot pick up construction debris/materials, yard waste, paint or any type of liquid.

MIDTOWN EAST NEIGHBORHOOD ALLIANCE - APRIL 13

The Midtown East Alliance extends from Parrish Avenue to Byers Avenue, between Frederica and Breckenridge Streets. The north boundary is 14th Street in the J.Z. Moore neighborhood, between J.R. Miller and Frederica. The alliance meets at Buena Vista Baptist Church at 5:00 p.m. on the first Thursday of every month.

Local winery wins big

Misty Meadows Winery in Owensboro recently medaled in five of six categories at the West Kentucky Wine Growers Association's President Ceremony in Paducah.

"We won three golds, a silver, a bronze, and this is the first competition we ever been in and we were told not to expect much," said Don Keller, owner of Misty Meadows Winery.

  • Shifley-York Neighborhood Alliance – 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 12 at Lewis Lane Baptist Church.

Dancing Santa turns 20

Check out the homemade dancing Santa Claus decoration celebrating its 20th birthday--and still going strong at a home on Stockton Drive in Owensboro.  Created in 1992 by Fred Maglinger, Santa dances with Christmas music playing in the background.

"My father is a retired artist and is the youngest 86 year old you ever met," says Fred's son, Danny.
