Semi-annual event kicks off today in Western Kentucky | News
OWENSBORO, KY (WFIE)- It's time for the first Highway 54 Yard Sale of the year, a three-day event that stretches from Leitchfield all the way to Owensboro.
Each year, this event takes place during Derby Weekend in the spring and in conjunction with Fordsville Days in the fall.
Organizers say this event was started as a way to help encourage tourism in small towns scattered along Highway 54.
Even though everything starts today, there are no set times for the yard sales.
If you're driving along Highway 54, you might notice several that spring up at different times and in different locations.
According to organizers, lots of vendors typically set up shop at Thrifty Bargain Supply in Fordsville.
Some business owners use this weekend to run a sale or another special event to bring in shoppers and help boost the local economy.
The Highway 54 yard sale draws people from neighboring states and as far away as Michigan.
Most vendors will be set up in Daviess and Ohio Counties.
Several groups hold fundraisers during these days as well.
On Saturday, the Fordsville Lions Club will have a pancake breakfast from 6-10 a.m. in the Fordsville Community Room.
