Police investigating pair of church burglaries

DAVIESS CO., KY (WFIE)- New from Daviess County, two rural churches have been hit by burglars in recent days.

So far, no arrests have been made in the burglaries. Church members say the burglars clearly have no care for God.

When members of the Dawson Memorial Baptist Church finished up bible study last Wednesday, they didn't think anything about it until they got a terrible surprise Sunday morning.

"We come in and find the podium had been turned over," said Willie Powell. "You know that was the first clue that something was going on."

An unwelcome guest had preyed upon the church's sound equipment. About $3,000 worth of equipment total.

Law enforcement says the burglars also got sound equipment from Chestnut Grove Baptist Church, but that's not all they did.

"Vandalized the churches," said Captain Bill Thomas with the Daviess Co. Sheriff's Department. "We feel certain that the two churches this past Saturday night were perpetrated by the same people."

"It's kind of sickening really because you know because here we're a small church without a whole lot or resources," Powell said. "We're a poor church. We can't afford that loss. We have insurance but it doesn't cover it all. So we're going to be out of pocket for some of it."

The sheriff's office is asking for the public's help.

"The public has to be our eyes and ears," Captain Thomas noted. "If they see suspicious people being at a church or anywhere simply give your local law enforcement a call."

We're told a couple more churches have also been burglarized in neighboring Hancock County.
