OWENSBORO, KY (WFIE)- Pitino Shelter leaders say the homeless population in Owensboro is higher than you might think and they want to bring awareness to that.
Friday night, the shelter is hosting a new event called A Night Without A Home.
The event is being held right now on the Kentucky Wesleyan Campus on Frederica Street.
It costs $50 per person to participate in A Night Without A Home. People are sleeping in boxes and in tents to raise awareness for Owensboro's homeless population.
Shelter leaders say between 200 and 500 kids ages five to 17 are homeless in Owensboro. Leaders hope Friday night's event will help change that statistic. The money donated will go towards helping the homeless in Owensboro.
"I've been there one time or another and it's not easy. It's really rough," said participant Harrison Eugene Stewart.
"You never know what you might need help for even for the smallest things to the biggest things you still going to need help somewhere down the line," said participant Thurston Young.
Shelter officials say participants get to go home Saturday morning after the event. The homeless do not, and that's something we should all keep in mind during events like these.
