Owensboro prepares to take the 'Plunge' | News

OWENSBORO, KY (WFIE)- Owensboro will be freezin' for a reason Saturday during the 2013 Polar Plunge, which benefits the Special Olympics.

This is the ninth year for Owensboro's Plunge.

Last year over 230 people participated by jumping into the lake at The Hines Center and raised over $54,000.

Here's how it works.

It's just like a walk-a-thon.

Polar bears, as they're called, raise a minimum of $75 for their frigid jump.

If you raise more than that, you could earn a special title.

The top male and female fundraisers will be named king and queen of the plunge, and the top younger fundraisers will be, you guessed it, prince and princess.

There's also a costume contest, and all polar bears get a t-shirt, which they'll probably need after that jump.

Six Polar Plunges are being held across the state this winter.

Both the number of polar bears and the amount of money raised for the Special Olympics in Kentucky last year set records, and participants are hoping to take those numbers even higher on Saturday. 

The Plunge will be going on all day, so you're invited to come out and help support a good cause.
