Teen charged with arson and burglary of church severely damaged by fire last week | News
OWENSBORO, KY (WFIE)- Owensboro Police say a 16-year-old juvenile male has been arrested on arson and burglary charges.
OPD says Sunday afternoon around 3:00 p.m., the Owensboro Police Department responded to First Christian Church located at 700 J. R. Miller Blvd. on a report of a suspicious person.
OPD says upon arrival, officers observed smoke inside the church and determined that several small fires were burning.
Officials say OFD was called to the scene and extinguished the fires. They say the fire caused minimal damage.
This is the same church that was severely damaged last week by a fire that investigators say was caused by lightning.
Authorities say further investigation by OPD detectives revealed that the teen had unlawfully entered the premises which was closed to the public due last week's fire.
Police say the teen started the small fires and stole food items from the location.
OPD says he was transported to the Warren Regional Juvenile Detention Center in Bowling Green, Kentucky.
