Loan program aiming to boost mom and pop shops

OWENSBORO, KY (WFIE)- A western Kentucky business gets a big boost through a loan program. That program is helping more mom and pop shops grow and expand their business across the Tri-State.

"Brown's Valley's a full truck equipment house. We do everything from body installation to repairs to trucks and trailers," said Owner of Brown Valley Trucking Tina Winston.

Winston is giving her place a total makeover, but this facelift will impact more than her business.

OPD says these stores sold alcohol to minors

OWENSBORO, KY (WFIE)- The Owensboro Police Department Street Crimes Unit has been investigating local businesses to determine if any have been selling alcohol to customers under the age of 21.

The unit was able to conduct the operation thanks to a grant provided by the Daviess County ASAP board.

During the investigation over 30 businesses throughout the city were checked. The following locations completed alcohol sales to underage patrons that were participants of the investigation:

Balloons over Botanical Garden

OWENSBORO, KY (WFIE)- You can expect to see balloons floating over Owensboro this weekend.

It's part of an event at the Western Kentucky Botanical Garden.  

Starting today folks will be able to take a ride in a hot air balloon, for this year's Dazzling Daylily Festival.

The balloons will be in the garden this weekend to kick off the week long event.

Other than riding in the balloons, there will also be live music, art exhibits, children's games, food vendors and of course a daylily sale.

Maintenance to cease on seven Daviess Co. roads

DAVIESS CO., KY (WFIE)- The Daviess County Fiscal Court voted to stop maintenance on parts of seven county roads where few people live.

Those roads are Boone Road, Ed Foster Spur, French Island Spur, Jarboe Lane, Reeder Road, Short Station Road and Keene Road.

Residents argued successfully to keep Old Deserter Creek Road and Paul Edge Road on the maintenance list.

Officials say just because the county won't take care of all roads anymore doesn't necessarily mean they can't be used.

O'boro Parks and Rec board puts unanimous support behind skate park

OWENSBORO, KY (WFIE)- New Thursday night from Owensboro. The Parks and Recreation Advisory Board voted unanimously to recommend building a skate park in Owensboro, but where and at what cost?

The board also decided that the park needs to be made of poured concrete, something skaters say is a must.

Hearing that the Parks Advisory Board is in support of a skate park being built in Owensboro is music to Elliott Carter's ears.

"We've felt like this is the most progress we've seen so far and we're just ready to get the ball rolling on this," Carter said

O'boro Parks and Rec deciding on skate park

OWENSBORO, KY (WFIE)- The Owensboro Parks and Recreation Advisory Board will take a look at the possibility of supporting a skate park in the city.

The main goal for the board is to decide whether they support the skate park project and will also consider a recommendation to the City Commission regarding the building of the park.

The recommendation will include more details like the size, location, hours of operation, rules and user load as well as other key elements of the park.

OFD prepared for water emergencies

OWENSBORO, KY (WFIE)- Owensboro firefighters get hands on training to keep everyone safe at the pools.

But officials stress water safety is everyone's responsibility. With summer in full swing, pools are packed.

"We practice the spine board, and the stokes basket. We also practice rescue techniques in the event we actually have to get in the water and rescue someone," said battalion chief Steve Leonard.

The Owensboro Fire Department is making sure they're ready for any water emergency that may come their way.
