You can learn about hot air ballooning today in Owensboro

OWENSBORO, KY (WFIE)- The Western Kentucky Botanical Garden is gearing up to host its monthly Walk, Talk, and Lunch in the Garden Tuesday morning.

As usual, it takes place in The Cottage at 11:30 a.m.

Today's speaker is Dr. Doug Harper from Western Kentucky University.

He'll talk about some of the physics that make up hot air ballooning.

Dr. Harper's presentation comes several weeks before next month's Balloons Over the Garden.

Starting on Friday, June 21st, you can take tethered and free-flight hot air balloon rides in the Garden.

Daviess Co. authorities carry the torch in support of the Special Olympics

DAVIESS CO., KY (WFIE)- Some members of the Daviess County Sheriff's Office were out bright and early in the rain participating in their annual Torch Run. 

During Monday's run, it didn't matter who was the fastest, because the focus was just on raising awareness.

"I was real tired," said Deputy Kenny Burns. "I sat down for a couple minutes, and now my legs feel like jelly. It's hard to stand now," he said. 

But for Deputy Burns, it was all worth it.

In keeping with a statewide trend, the annual survey of tourism spending in Kentucky shows an increase in Owensboro and Daviess County in 2012. All nine of the state’s tourism regions registered gains for 2012 compared with 2011. 

The economic impact of tourism in Kentucky amounted to more than $12.2 billion in 2012, Governor Steve Beshear and Tourism, Arts and Heritage Secretary Marcheta Sparrow announced Monday. The economic impact figure is a 4.4 percent increase from 2011.

“The Kentucky tourism industry continues to do well, which is good news for all of us,” Gov. Beshear said. “These figures illustrate the importance of tourism in Kentucky as well as in communities big and small across the Commonwealth.”

Daviess County authorities run to support the Special Olympics

DAVIESS COUNTY, KY (WFIE)- The Daviess County Sheriff's Office is showing its support for the Special Olympics by holding its annual Torch Run.

It starts on Highway 60 West near the Daviess and Henderson County line.

The sheriff and some of his deputies will run to the courthouse, which is about 14 miles.

They'll head down Highway 60 to Stanley, then run on River Road through the Bon Harbor Hills area.

After that, the run heads down West 1st Street into downtown Owensboro.

Big announcement coming today from O'boro Convention Center

OWENSBORO, KY (WFIE)- Officials are expected to make a big announcement today about the Owensboro Convention Center.

It's scheduled to take place at the overlook in Smothers Park at 2 p.m.

We don't know too many details just yet, but staff members say that we'll learn about a highly-anticipated new show that's taking place at the Convention Center next year.

They predict that it's going to be a big success and generate regional excitement.
