High attendance day results are in | Schools

The Daviess County Public Schools district participated in a statewide “High Attendance Day” on Tuesday, Sept. 18, sponsored by the Kentucky Directors of Pupil Personnel.

All DCPS schools sponsored special events and activities to encourage good attendance on Tuesday. Mike Gray, DCPS community services coordinator, said schools were very pleased with the results, noting that seven schools had attendance over 98 percent and six others recorded attendance over 97 percent.

Daviess County Middle School led the district with attendance at 98.91 percent on Tuesday, followed closely by Whitesville Elementary School at 98.86 percent.

Gray said DCPS schools do an outstanding job throughout the year in encouraging good attendance. “We recognize that by improving attendance, we improve academic achievement,” he said. “Students must be in the classroom to learn.”

DCPS Superintendent Owens Saylor also extended appreciation to staff members across the district who work with children and families to ensure good attendance. “We reach out with personal contact to identify reasons for a child’s absence, looking for opportunities to provide assistance and resources to help resolve issues that might be going on that hinder a child from being in school every day,” he said. “Most of all, our schools cultivate positive environments. Our schools are exciting and nurturing places where kids want to be.”
