Owensboro Middle School is being recognized as an Apple Distinguished School for the 2012-2013 school year for its use of digital technology.
According to OPS, Owensboro Middle School is among 87 schools that Apple is recognizing nationwide as “exemplary learning environments and centers of innovation, leadership, and educational excellence”.
The Apple Distinguished School designation is reserved for schools that integrate Apple technology in education and meet criteria for the five best practices: visionary leadership, innovative learning and teaching, ongoing professional learning, compelling evidence of success, and a flexible learning environment.
“Teachers are seeing the MacBook Air as a seamless resource to introduce concepts, reinforce ideas, and completely personalize education for students,” said Dr. Matthew Constant, Owensboro Public Schools Assistant Superintendent of Technology and Federal Programs. “Reading deficiencies are identified and remediated with the help of the MacBook. Students are able to unleash creative talents that tap into the highest levels of learning. The classroom is transforming itself at Owensboro Middle School with the synergy of the 21st century resource along with the comprehensive planning approach taken by our hard-working OPS staff. We are excited about where the school will go next as a result of what is already being accomplished.”
OMS faculty members were surprised with the announcement and celebration of the Apple Distinguished School designation during a faculty meeting at OMS North Campus on Tuesday, Jan. 8, after school.
Owensboro Middle School North and South campuses serve approximately 1,400 students in grades 5-8. Students in grades 5-8 are provided Apple MacBook Air laptops for use at school and home. George Powell is principal for both campuses.
