2013 Free fishing weekend in Kentucky

 

June 1 and 2 will be Free Fishing Weekend in Kentucky.

State residents and nonresidents can fish any allowable inland water in the Bluegrass State that weekend without a fishing license.

Adults can fish free all weekend, and kids under 16 do not need a license to fish in Kentucky. 

Season dates, limits and all other fishing regulations must be followed during Free Fishing Weekend.

The schedules have been completed for the upcoming KHSAA 9th District Baseball & Softball Tournaments.  The softball district will be hosted by Daviess County while Apollo serve as the baseball district host.

Tickets for each tournament will be $5 for adults and $3 for students.  Coaches, Administrator and Officials’ passes will be honored for the holder of the card (no guest).  No district employee passes will be accepted for admission.

Steve Howard has been named head volleyball coach at Daviess County High School. He had formerly served as head volleyball coach at Owensboro Catholic High School from 2000-09, winning seven district titles and seven regional titles. Career highlights include sweeping the regular and post seasons in Region 3 in 2003, 2006 and 2007. He has posted nine seasons with 20 or more wins, and five seasons with 30 or more wins.

Howard, who has twice been named Regional Coach of the Year, served as president of the Kentucky Volleyball Coaches Association from 2010-12.

Daviess Co.-Apollo baseball game moved up because of weather

Tonight’s varsity baseball game time of Apollo vs. Daviess County has been moved up to 5:00 pm.  At present the weather forecast shows a greater chance of rain later in the evening. 

The varsity game is a seeded game for the 9th district tournament and Apollo Athletic Director Jon Boultinghouse says that's why they are making every effort to insure that the varsity game gets played this evening.

10th annual Masters Challenge kicks off soon

 

The 2013 Masters Athletic Challenge will be held May 16 - June 8, and will feature bowling, swimming, tennis, golf, cycling, and track and field.

Formerly known as the Green River Regional Senior Games, this annual event promotes physical fitness and healthy competition among area residents age 50+.

The games kick off in mid-May, with bowling at Diamond Lanes South in Owensboro (Thursday, May 16) and swimming at Owensboro Health’s HealthPark (Saturday, May 18).

Apollo to host flag football camp for special needs players

Apollo to host flag football camp for special needs players

 

Apollo High School is planning a flag football camp for special needs players ages 14-22. The camp is free for boys and young men with physical, developmental or intellectual challenges, and is scheduled from 6 to 8 p.m. May 29-31 at the high school, located at 2280 Tamarack Road. All participants will receive a camp T-shirt.

The camp will conclude with an exhibition game that is open to the public. The Apollo/ Independence Bank Eagles Bowl 2013 begins at 6:30 p.m. May 31. Admission is free, but donations will be accepted with proceeds benefiting Puzzle Pieces activity day center for individuals with intellectual disabilities; the Green River Area Down Syndrome Association; Special Olympics; and the local chapter of the Council for Exceptional Children.

Area athletes to compete in Special Olympics spring games

 

The Special Olympics Kentucky Area 2 Spring Games will be held Saturday, April 27, at Apollo High School in Owensboro. The Area 2 meet includes more than 150 athletes from Daviess, Grayson, Henderson, Ohio, Union and Webster Counties. The Area Spring Games include both powerlifting and track and field. Powerlifting will get underway at 9:30 a.m. in the Apollo gym. The event’s official Opening Ceremonies, including the parade of athletes, will take place at 12:30 p.m. on the track. And the track and field competition begins at 1:15 p.m.
